Matthew’s quiet night in is disturbed by a couple of strange visitors. The fearsome Scanlon seems very interested in Matthew’s book collection while the voluptuous Lisa is paying more attention to Matthew himself. But what is it they are really after? A menacing short play with a comic twist.

Set is of middle class living room with dim lighting simulating a moonlit night. Sofa,coffee table with telephone,drinks cabinet but predominantly bookcases and books.Clock on wall shows 2am.Before curtain opens phone is heard to ring and continues to ring until curtain up when door opens stage right.Matthew appears. He is middle aged,dishevilled and wears a hastily tied dressing gown over bright coloured pyjamas

(He answers phone)

Matthew: Hello?…Hello?Who is this please?

 ( Looks at phone in exasperation before slamming it    back in its cradle and exiting door stage right. Pause; Thunderous knocking on door stage right…repeated as necessary. Matthew reappears stage right and strides to door stage left. He fumbles with the lock and eventually opens the door a crack. Scanlon barges in knocking Matthew across the room. Scanlon is middle aged,well groomed, very smartly dressed in a dark suit and tie and has highly polished black shoes.)

Matthew: What the hell!!

Scanlon: Scanlon, Government, department nine

(Produces a wallet containing an ID card which he waves at Matthew.)

Matthew: Department Nine…?

 (Reaches for ID which is immediately withdrawn by Scanlon and replaced in his coat pocket.)

Scanlon: You are Matthew James Holmes?

Matthew: Yes, but what’s all …..

Scanlon: Of 21 Gettysburg Gardens, Lowestoft Suffolk?

Matthew: Yes, but what…..

Scanlon: You live alone.You are unmarried.You have no children.

(Telephone rings.Matthew reaches out to answer it but Scanlon puts a restraining hand on his arm.)

Scanlon: It’s for me.
