On curtain up the music of Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer is played. Enter stage left Vicky, a sweet but rather dim carer. She is pushing a trolley containing crockery and cutlery. She commences to set the table for four. When she has finished she stands back and surveys the scene before picking up one of the plates, examines it then spits on it and wipes it clean with her apron. She does the same for the other three plates before exiting left. Music off and after a brief pause enter slowly stage left Vera, she shuffles in with a Zimmer frame, stops at the doorway, looks around and sees the room is empty, picks up her frame and strides in, sitting on one of the chairs. She inspects the plates, cutlery and napkins minutely. She spits on one of the plates, wipes it with her sleeve then changes it with the plate to her left.
Enter stage left Agnes, she has a walking stick and is wearing a hearing aid. She sits to Vera’s left)
