THIS IS NOT A CHILDREN’S NATIVITY PLAY!

Hillsborough school puts on a nativity play…with a difference! All the children are played by adults dressed as children!

It’s Nativity time again, and the kids are having the usual trouble – they can’t keep the lines straight, can’t pronounce the long words and want to wave at their parents as soon as they’re onstage. This play will feel very familiar to a lot of people!

The opening song is appalling, there a fight over who should hold baby Jesus and things go from bad to worse culminating in a free for all after which the teacher has to apologise to the audience!

Read an extract here:

Joseph: Can we come in please we’re cold and hungry and Mary has Jesus.

Innkeeper: No.

Joseph: (Whispers) That’s wrong

Innkeeper: Why?

Joseph: You’re supposed to say there’s no room at the inn.

Innkeeper: Who says?

Joseph: Mrs. Greatback

Innkeeper: I don’t care.

Mary: She’ll tell you off.

Innkeeper: I don’t care.

(Joseph pushes innkeeper)

Joseph: Do it properly.

(Innkeeper pushes Joseph, he stumbles back and knocks Mary over. She drops Jesus and begins to cry)

Prompt: Stop it! Stop it this instant. Get up Mary, you’re alright aren’t you? You’re not hurt are you?

Mary: Noo (Gets up with the baby still sobbing quietly) he has to say the right words though (points at innkeeper).

Prompt: Innkeeper, say the right words, like you were told.

Innkeeper: (Short pause) Well Mary and the horse can come in but Joseph can’t.

Joseph: Why not?

Innkeeper: Because I wanted to be Joseph and it’s not fair. You always get to be Joseph
